Network Development Plan 2040 – Electricity Transmission Grid

Strong, resilient and reliable electricity transmission and distribution grids are essential for achieving the transition to an energy efficient, climate neutral, post-carbon society. Numerous additional generation units using renewable energies must be successfully integrated and a large number of electric vehicles and heat pumps must be supplied by the electrical grids.

While Creos actively contributes to the energy transition by developing and operating the grid infrastructure, it also faces a number of challenges. A particular challenge on the transmission system level is that even though the fast-growing renewable energy generation will have to be integrated into the power grid to reduce the overall amount of imported electricity, power consumption is equally increasing. Especially during times of peak demand, the system must be ready to balance supply and demand, often with the help of imports from our neighbouring countries.

Luxembourg’s import capacities must be dimensioned to withstand periods of high demand and limited domestic power generation in order to reach the ambitious decarbonisation targets while ensuring the security of supply.

With the values and conclusions of the Scenario Report 2040, and after analysis of the existing electricity transmission infrastructure, Creos assessed the future infrastructure requirements and incorporated the outcome in the development plan for the electricity transmission grid.

The Network Development Plan 2040 shows the planned modifications and improvements of the transmission grid, which are presented with the help of illustrations of the different completion phases of the intended reinforcement project.

To conclude, Creos would like to highlight that the security of supply and the reliability of the networks are Creos’ core objectives. Efficient, flexible and reliable transmission networks are essential for a fail-safe supply of electrical energy.

The related “Project 380” foresees several measures to ensure this supply in the future. The project represents a new, future-oriented replacement construction that provides a better cross-border connection between Luxembourg and Germany.
