LIST looks ahead to Sustainable Places and BIM&BAU 2026
As LIST prepares to co-host Sustainable Places 2026 and BIM&BAU in Luxembourg from 2 to 4 December, Sylvain Kubicki, head of the Sustainable Urban & Built Environment group, highlights how digital innovation, citizen participation and new approaches to renovation can help shape more sustainable and resilient cities.
Faced with climate change, housing pressures and the need to decarbonise the built environment, the construction sector must look beyond individual buildings. The challenge is increasingly about transforming entire neighbourhoods while balancing environmental performance, affordability and residents’ needs.
From individual buildings to entire neighbourhoods
“Building-related problems are systemic problems that cannot be managed or understood in isolation.”
Sylvain Kubicki, head of the Sustainable Urban & Built Environment group
At LIST, researchers are developing digital tools and simulation approaches to support more informed decisions on urban regeneration. Through projects such as REGEN, which focuses on low-carbon, inclusive, and affordable neighbourhood regeneration, and MUST, which explores new ways of involving citizens in urban planning, LIST is helping bridge the gap between technological innovation and real-world needs.
Digital twins, interactive simulations and data-driven tools can help stakeholders visualize the impact of renovation scenarios, assess environmental and economic trade-offs, and engage citizens in shaping their neighbourhoods.
Yet technology alone is not enough. Making the transition a reality also requires accessible solutions, collaboration between stakeholders, and regulatory frameworks that encourage innovation.
Bringing research and innovation into practice
These challenges will be at the heart of Sustainable Places 2026, the pan-European conference dedicated to research and innovation in the sustainable built environment, taking place in Luxembourg from 2 to 4 December. Co-organized by LIST and R2M Solution, the event will bring together researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders from across Europe to exchange knowledge, showcase innovative solutions and advance more sustainable and resilient buildings and cities.
Taking place within the conference on 3 December, BIM&BAU 2026 will focus on the transformations shaping construction in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. Organized by LIST, CRTI-B, Neobuild and Luxinnovation, the event will explore digitalization, BIM, sustainable construction, and emerging technologies, highlighting practical solutions and fostering collaboration across the sector.
Together, the two events will help bridge the gap between research and practice, supporting the transition towards a more sustainable built environment.
For LIST, the ambition is clear : to turn research and digital innovation into tangible solutions that support more sustainable, resilient and inclusive cities.
