Réunion Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate à Mondorf-les-Bains

Le MEF compte 17 participants fixes : Australie, Brésil, Canada, Chine, UE (représentée par la Commission et la Présidence), France, Allemagne, Inde, Indonésie, Italie, Japon, Corée du Sud, Mexique, Russie, Afrique du Sud, Royaume-Uni, États-Unis. Ils représentent 80% des émissions mondiales des gaz à effet de serre. À cela s’ajoutent des pays observateurs.

Cette plateforme est une initiative du ministère des Affaires étrangères des États-Unis, lancée en 2009 pour faciliter le dialogue entre les principaux pays développés et les pays en développement sur les négociations concernant le changement climatique. En vue de la conférence sur le changement climatique COP21 à Paris, quatre réunions du MEF sont prévues, dont une se tiendra au Luxembourg.

La réunion à Mondorf-les-Bains, à laquelle les États sont représentés en grande majorité par leurs ministres, sera présidée par deux figures importantes du gouvernement des États-Unis : Caroline Atkinson, conseillère pour les affaires économiques internationales (sherpa G8-G20), et Todd Stern, envoyé spécial des États-Unis pour le changement climatique, négociateur-clé des États-Unis à Kyoto et à Paris.

Dans le cadre d’une conférence de presse prévue le 19 juillet à 16 heures dans la salle Symphonie du Domaine thermal à Mondorf-les-Bains, les deux représentants-clés des États-Unis dans les discussions concernant le nouveau traité sur le changement climatique informeront sur les progrès au sein du MEF et leurs positions et attentes en vue de la conférence sur le changement climatique COP 21 à Paris. 

Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate Meeting (MEF) in Mondorf-les-Bains (18.-19.07.2015)

On 18 and 19 July, the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF) will meet in Mondorf-les-Bains in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

The 17 major economies participating in the MEF are Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States plus participating countries.

MEF is an initiative of the US State Department intended to facilitate a candid dialogue among major developed and developing economies, in order to achieve a successful outcome in climate negotiations. In view of the Climate Conference in December in Paris, four meetings of MEF will take place this year.

The meeting in Mondorf-les-Bains will be chaired by two key figures of the US government : Caroline Atkinson, Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics and Todd Stern, Special Envoy for Climate Change at the State Department, the President’s chief climate negotiator. The members participating in MEF are represented by their ministers. 

On a press conference which will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday 19 July in the Room Symphonie in the Domaine thermal in Mondorf-les-Bains, the two key figures of US climate change policies will inform about the outcome of this MEF session and the US expectations for the Paris climate talks in December.
